The flag of St George or flag of England is the central element in Britain’s Union Jack.
In the late middle ages, soldiers without livery would march in a white surcoat with the Cross of St George as their emblem or, if they had a livery, the cross would appear on an armband, with St George being the military saint and Crusader. The Red cross is still the proper flag to fly from an English church, though the combined crosses of St George, St Andrew and St Patrick have replaced it as Britain’s national flag.
