According to legend, this flag featuring a white cross on a blue background, was first flown one morning in 832AD as King Óengus (II) (or King Angus) led the Picts and Scots in battle against the Angles. Having prayed for deliverance the night before, Saint Andrew is said to have appeared to Oengus and bolstered the courage of his forces against the Angle king Athelstan.
