Designed by a 15 year-old school girl, this flag is a colourful representation of Papua New Guineas history.
In the hoist we see the Southern Cross, in the fly the silhouette of a raggiana bird of paradise all set against a black and red background. Red and black have long been traditional colours of Papua New Guinea tribes and are also reminiscent of the country’s time under the German Empire prior to 1918. Prior to 1970, Papua new Guinea was known as the Australian Trust Territory of Papua and New Guinea and it’s flag featured the bird of Paradise on a green background for sporting events, another flag was suggested by the Australian Administration but the current flag was settled on after a competition on 1971.
