The Austrian Flag has been used since the Battle of Acre in 1191.
According to legend, the white tunic of Leopold V of Babenberg, Duke of Austria, was so bloodstained that the only part which remained white was underneath his sword belt. This inspired the triband design of the Austrian flag with 3 horizontal stripes of red, white and red again. This flag was not used after unification with Nazi Germany in 1938, however reappeared when independence was restored in 1945.
