Used at the finish for most forms of motor racing this chequered flag has a mysterious history.

The first record of flags used in motor racing is in 1899, but it was only the red (stop) and yellow (caution) flags. The earliest mention of a chequered flag is a photo of a race in the USA in 1913. It might be that the origins of the flag lay in its use in bicycle racing in France around the beginning of the 20th Century. Since the first Grand Prix proper was in France in 1907 under the auspices of the Automobile Club de France.
